Grand Opening of the First Ukrainian Library in Wales

On November 29-30, 2024, Cardiff became the proud home of a remarkable cultural milestone: the grand opening of the first Ukrainian library in Wales. This deeply emotional and inspiring event, hosted by Settled, united the Ukrainian community and supporters to celebrate heritage, resilience, and the power of literature.

The event was made possible through the tireless efforts of volunteers, including Olena Koliubaieva, a refugee and the driving force behind the project. Olena’s dedication exemplifies the strength of community and the transformative potential of love and hard work.

The library is more than just a repository of books—it is a sanctuary of Ukrainian identity and an anchor for a community navigating difficult times. It offers a place to honor the past, connect with shared experiences, and envision a hopeful future.

The library’s creation was supported by the Reading Studios Foundation and its founder, Dorota Niedzwiecka, who played an integral role in bringing this project to life. Former First Minister Mark Drakeford inaugurated the library by cutting the ribbon and emphasizing the enduring importance of literature in preserving cultural identity for oppressed peoples—a sentiment resonating deeply in Wales.

Notable attendees included:

  • Mick Antoniw MS, whose personal connection as the son of a Ukrainian refugee underscored the role of culture in maintaining identity.
  • Stephen Doughty MP and High Sheriff Janie Howells, long-term supporters of the Ukrainian cause.

The celebration also featured a moving performance by author Mykhailo Zhuravl, who introduced works by contemporary Ukrainian writers currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Mykhailo generously donated books, symbolizing the indomitable Ukrainian spirit and resilience.

The event’s success was a collective effort:

  • Anastasiia Kovtun curated the event program and provided technical expertise.
  • Nadya McLellan and Zarina Popko delighted attendees with catering, while Larysa Martseva and Viktoriya Kizim enhanced the entertainment program.
  • Singing Circle Cardiff filled the space with harmonious voices.
  • Polina Yenal captured the day with stunning photography.
  • Elena Ponomarenko managed the reconstruction project under the design guidance of Ganna Goiman.

The Ukrainian library is poised to serve as a lasting cultural hub, fostering community ties and preserving Ukrainian literature for generations to come. As Mykhailo Zhuravl remarked, “This is a small but significant contribution to the greater cause of defending and preserving our national spirit.”

The opening was a day filled with laughter, tears, and immense pride, symbolizing the resilience of the Ukrainian people in the face of adversity. Together, they have shown that the Ukrainian spirit cannot and will not be conquered.
