On Saturday, December 28th, Barry Island witnessed an inspiring show of solidarity as brave swimmers took a chilly plunge into the Bristol Channel to raise funds for Ukraine. The fundraiser, originally postponed due to gales, finally took place under clear skies, attracting a crowd of supporters and participants.
The event began at 11:45 am at the Western Shelter, where swimmers gathered before braving the “cappuccino waters” of the channel at midday. Participants contributed a suggested £5 donation, with all proceeds directed to support the courageous defenders of Ukraine.
Organizers emphasized safety, urging swimmers to ensure they had no underlying health conditions and reminding everyone that participation was at their own risk. Despite the freezing temperatures, spirits were high as the community came together for a cause close to their hearts.
By the end of the day, the event had raised £200 through sponsorships, with donations continuing to flow in. For those who missed the event but wish to contribute, donations can be made via Cardiff for Ukraine.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the participants and supporters who made this event a success. Their courage and generosity are a testament to the power of community and the enduring spirit of solidarity. Together, they’ve made a meaningful contribution to help those in need.
