Pontyclun Knitting Group Receives Special Recognition from Ukrainian Brigade

A local knitting group ‘Yarnmongers & Friends’ based at Cafe 50 in Pontyclun has received extraordinary recognition for their humanitarian support of Ukrainian soldiers – a hand-painted military flag from the brigade they’ve been helping.

The group, known for their charitable work supporting organizations like Velindre, Women’s Aid, and Cwtch Cymru, expanded their efforts to aid Ukrainian soldiers after group member Jan Teisar, whose husband is Ukrainian with family in the country, highlighted the urgent need for basic necessities on the frontline.

In response, the Yarnmongers began creating handmade toilet bags filled with essential items including soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and thermal socks. Their humanitarian initiative caught the attention of the brigade receiving these supplies, who responded with a unique gesture of gratitude.

The soldiers presented the group with a specially designed flag featuring their brigade’s emblem – a wolverine with an axe – alongside the Welsh Dragon, symbolizing the connection between Wales and Ukraine. The flag includes an inscription in Ukrainian that translates to “Your souls for our wrongs” and bears signatures from multiple soldiers of the X1 Company 2 Battalion. This symbol of international friendship is now proudly displayed at Cafe 50.

During a recent visit to the group, Member of the Senedd Mick Antoniw met with the Yarnmongers, including group coordinator Sheila Harris, who confirmed their commitment to continuing support for Ukraine. “They all felt the need to respond to the cry for help,” Harris explained.

The group’s work exemplifies the strong bonds forming between Welsh communities and Ukraine, showing how local initiatives can make a meaningful impact in supporting those affected by the ongoing conflict.
