On March 22, Caerphilly Library hosted a vibrant and emotional workshop on Petrykivka painting, a traditional Ukrainian art form. Participants decorated stones and created postcards in Ukrainian folk style, which will become part of the larger “Ukrainian Gratitude Garden” project.
The workshop brought together 16 participants of various ages who enjoyed the creative process, communication, and exchange of ideas. Petrykivka painting is a national cultural heritage of Ukraine, included in UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. This artistic style is distinguished by bright floral elements, viburnum berries, and expressive brushstrokes that convey the beauty and colorfulness of Ukrainian nature.
Art with a Special Mission
The works created during the workshop will have a special purpose: “On March 29, we will place the stones under the Memorial Tree as a symbol of our remembrance, respect, and unity. The postcards will be given to honorary guests at the event with sincere words of gratitude from the community,” the organizers explained.
The painted stones and postcards will become part of a major event scheduled for March 29, 2025, at Morgan Jones Park in Caerphilly. During this event, a Memorial Tree will be planted in honor of Ukrainian soldiers, and the “Welsh Garden of Gratitude” will be expanded.
A Unifying Event for the Entire Community
The upcoming event promises to be a true celebration of Ukrainian-Welsh friendship and solidarity. The program will include vocal and poetic performances, games and activities for children, and a communal picnic with treats. The organizers invite everyone to join, wearing vyshyvankas (Ukrainian embroidered shirts) or clothing in blue and yellow colors.
“This will not just be an event. It will be our moment of unity, remembrance, and strength, an explosion of goodness, memory, and Ukrainian spirit,” the organizers emphasize.
Information about the upcoming event is already spreading throughout the local community through Caerphilly schools, churches, community groups, and local organizations, indicating significant interest in Ukrainian culture and the readiness of local residents to support the Ukrainian community.
The event will take place on March 29 at 12:00 PM at Morgan Jones Park, Caerphilly (CF83 1AB). Entry is free for all who wish to attend.
