What You Will Learn

In this video and the accompanying presentation, we cover the essential aspects of the new democratic process in Wales:

1. Who Can Vote? Wales has one of the most inclusive voting systems in the world. You can vote if you live in Wales, are 16 or over, and are a British, Irish, or EU citizen. Crucially, qualifying foreign citizens (those with permission to enter or stay in the UK) also have the right to vote. This ensures that everyone who calls Wales home—including refugees and new residents—has a voice.

2. How is the System Changing? In 2026, the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) will increase from 60 to 96 members. The election will use a new Proportional Representation system, meaning the number of seats a party wins will more accurately reflect the percentage of votes they receive. This leads to fairer results and a stronger democracy.

3. Why Does it Matter? The Senedd makes decisions on issues that directly affect your daily life, family, and community. Your vote influences policies on:

  • Health: The NHS and free prescriptions.

  • Education: Free school meals and tuition fee support.

  • Housing and Transport.
