On October 27th, the “Garden of Memories” art exhibition held its closing event in Caerphilly, marking a special evening of cultural exchange and community support. The exhibition featured works by Olesia Miftahova, a talented Ukrainian artist currently based in Wales, and was steeped in authentic Welsh culture, celebrating the power of remembrance and human solidarity. The ‘Ukrainians in Wales’ online magazine served as the media partner for the exhibition.
As described by the artist, the gathering saw Ukrainian and Welsh guests sitting “side-by-side, united by a shared desire to create, inspire, and support one another.”
The evening’s programme began with a warm and inspirational opening address from Kostyantyn Kozlov. Ms. Miftahova then shared her own impressions and gratitude, emphasizing that “culture is a vital bridge that connects Ukrainian and Welsh hearts.” The event also beautifully integrated Welsh culture, with talented musicians, introduced by Robin Grayson, delighting guests with live classical Welsh music. Poet Mike Jenkins delivered a moving poetry reading that “truly touched the hearts of everyone present.”
The importance of art and mutual support was highlighted by several distinguished guests. Chris Evans, Member of Parliament for the Caerphilly constituency, was an honoured guest and speaker. In a statement about the event, Mr. Evans praised the “warm welcome the people of Caerphilly have given to the Ukrainian refugees,” calling it “a light in the darkness.”
He affirmed the community’s message: “We stand with the people of Ukraine against aggression, and we are honoured to have been able to provide them a home when they needed it most.” Mr. Evans also expressed his delight in acquiring two of Ms. Miftahova’s artworks for his London office.
Support was also strongly voiced by local leaders. Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Deputy Leader of CCBC, expressed his appreciation for all those striving to make the world a better place. Other honoured guests included Cllr Dawn Ingram-Jones, Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough, and Lynn Gazal, Head of Climate Action Caerffili.
The spirit of cultural exchange continued as guests—including many Ukrainian and Welsh friends—sampled traditional Welsh cuisine, which added “a special touch of warmth and coziness to the evening.”
Organisers extended sincere thanks to the event’s photographer, Daria Zhdanova, for “capturing the soulful moments of the gathering.” Gratitude was also expressed to all guests for their “energy, warmth, and support.”
The day served as powerful proof that when people come together to share thoughts, art, and inspiration, they build a “human bridge capable of uniting hearts and leaving a lasting trace in memory.”
