Monmouthshire MP Meets Ukrainian Community in Abergavenny

In a recent meeting in Abergavenny, Catherine Fookes MP sat down with members of the Ukrainian community living in Monmouthshire to listen to their stories, learn about their current challenges, and discuss the uncertainty surrounding their future in the UK.

The event brought together dozens of Ukrainian families who arrived in Wales through the Homes for Ukraine and other visa schemes following Russia’s full-scale invasion. Many attendees spoke with gratitude about the warm welcome and support they’ve received from local residents and host families in Monmouthshire. At the same time, they voiced growing concern about their long-term status in the UK, particularly as temporary visa arrangements approach their expiration dates.

Catherine Fookes, recently elected MP for Monmouthshire, assured attendees that she would raise their concerns in Parliament and work to obtain clearer answers from the Home Office regarding visa extensions and options for permanent residency. “You have my full support,” she said, “and I’ll do everything I can to ensure you receive the help you need.”

The meeting was also a moment of cultural exchange and appreciation. At its conclusion, members of the Ukrainian community presented Ms. Fookes with a hand-painted card featuring vibrant blue and yellow flowers — a traditional Ukrainian design symbolising resilience and hope. Inside the card was a handwritten message expressing heartfelt thanks for her openness and willingness to listen.

“We are deeply grateful to know we are not alone — your support brings hope and strength,” the card read, signed by the Ukrainian Community of Abergavenny and the surrounding area.

The gathering was a meaningful opportunity for dialogue between a local representative and one of Monmouthshire’s growing diaspora communities. It underscored both the challenges Ukrainians face as they try to rebuild their lives in Wales, and the importance of political engagement and advocacy in ensuring they are not forgotten.
