On 24 April 2025, a significant step was taken in the UK Parliament to support Ukrainian refugees. An Early Day Motion (EDM 63371), titled “Ensuring Stability for Ukrainian Refugees in the UK,” was tabled by MP Hywel Williams, drawing attention to the urgent need for long-term solutions for Ukrainians displaced by the ongoing war.
The motion recognises the outstanding contribution Ukrainian refugees have made to communities across the UK, including Wales, and highlights concerns about the short-term nature of current visa schemes, which risk leaving many without stable housing, employment, or educational opportunities. It calls on the UK Government to provide clear pathways to permanent residency for Ukrainians who wish to stay, ensuring that they can build secure futures in the UK.
The EDM also urges continued support for local authorities and community sponsors who have played a vital role in welcoming and integrating Ukrainian families. It emphasises the importance of maintaining strong government funding for these initiatives to avoid a new crisis of homelessness or insecurity.
In Wales, the Homes for Ukraine programme has been an essential lifeline for many displaced families, but with sponsorship agreements reaching their initial end dates, uncertainty is growing. Community leaders, charities, and local councils have already voiced concerns about the potential gaps in support unless longer-term measures are introduced.
The motion has received cross-party support, reflecting a broad consensus in Parliament that more must be done to protect and support Ukrainian refugees in the UK.

We encourage our readers, especially the Ukrainian community in Wales, to stay informed and to reach out to their local MPs to express support for initiatives that ensure a stable future for all displaced Ukrainians.
