Ukrainian artist Olesia Myftakhova recently met with Members of the Senedd and local councillors in Caerphilly to show her artwork and discuss potential future exhibitions. The meeting included Senedd Members Delyth Jewell AS/MS and Peredur Owen Griffiths AS/MS, along with Caerphilly councillors Steve Skivens and Michael Edwards. The officials showed interest in Myftakhova’s work and discussed possibilities for future exhibitions.
The meeting also covered current challenges in refugee and asylum seeker support. Discussion focused on making Nation of Sanctuary initiatives more inclusive by involving refugees and asylum seekers directly in programme development, and the need for better feedback systems based on community experiences.
Myftakhova was described as a “Welsh-Ukrainian artist” during the meeting, reflecting her position as both a Ukrainian artist and Wales resident. Peredur Owen Griffiths AS/MS, who has experience in refugee support work, contributed insights from his background in Nation of Sanctuary initiatives.
The meeting showed continued support for Ukrainian communities in Wales, with officials expressing interest in both cultural projects and practical integration support. This type of engagement helps Ukrainian residents connect with local civic life while sharing their cultural background with Welsh communities.
